Datalogic optical rotary encoders are sensors suitable for measuring variables such as speed, number of revolutions, position, and even linear movements with absolute precision in many applications of industrial automation and material logistics.
Datalogic's sensors are available in a wide range including incremental and absolute optical encoders.
The incremental rotary optical encoders of the ENC series are used to detect angular displacements, or the number of rotations, by counting the number of pulses supplied at the output. The resolution of the encoder is defined in Pulse Per Revolution (PPR), with models available from 100 up to 10,000 PPR, also in the programmable version of the IEP series.
The incremental encoders are available with a glass fiber reinforced plastic housing with a diameter of Ø41 mm, or with a metal case with a diameter of Ø58 mm; with shaft Ø6, Ø8 or Ø10 mm, or hollow hole Ø15 mm. The electrical connection with universal Push-pull / Line driver output is available in a 1.5 m cable version, or with an M12 or M23 connector.
The absolute rotary encoders of the AST single-turn or AMT multi-turn series are used to detect the absolute value of the angular displacement of one or more rotations of the shaft. In these cases, the resolution of the encoder is expressed in Code Per Revolution (CPR), with models available from 13 bits per single revolution, equal to 8192 CPR, up to the extreme resolution of 16x14 bits with 65536 CPR for 16384 revolutions.
Absolute encoders are available in standard metal case with diameter Ø58 mm, with shaft Ø6 or Ø10 mm, or hollow hole Ø15 mm. The electrical connection with SSI interface is available with a 1.5 m cable, or with an M12 or M23 connector. Furthermore, models with a Fieldbus module are available in CANbus, Devicenet, Ethercat, Profibus and Profinet versions.
The solution is completed by accessories, such as metric wheels for linear measurements on conveyor belts, draw wire modules used to convert from linear to rotary movements, mechanical mounting brackets and couplings, cables and connectors.
Optical Rotary Encoder Applications
Motor speed control is the most common application: the encoder is mounted directly to the end of a motor via a shaft and provides feedback to a drive to verify that the speed and direction are correct
Web speed or tension control is another application in which an encoder is mounted to a motor as a tension roller: any unevenness in the rotating speed of the tension roller is fed to a controller to maintain an even tension
Length measurement applications use an encoder mounted on a wheel, in order to convert a linear movement into a rotation angle, or number of rotations, so giving a length measurement to control cutting, folding or other operations
Conveying is another common industry application where encoders are used to monitor and control speed and position. Similar to a motor feedback application, encoders are attached to a motor or intermediate axle shafts along conveyors
